La Dombes is a\u00a0vast, diffuse tract\u00a0of pasture, woodland, and wetlands just off the main road from Lyon to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ventbird.com\/birding-tour\/2016\/05\/29\/france-birds-art-in-burgundy\">Burgundy<\/a> &#8212; and one of the best places I know to just wander, letting the quiet roads and the abundant birds lead from one placid lake to the next.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"La Dombes by Rick Wright, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/17364120416\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/8\/7795\/17364120416_7d6d11b457_z.jpg\" alt=\"La Dombes\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In truth, it isn&#8217;t as confusing as it used to be: nowadays there&#8217;s even a telephone &#8220;app&#8221; that promises to take you from one pond to the next. Even so, there are more than a thousand lakes dotting the quiet countryside (take that, Minnesota!), and because many are still used by\u00a0commercial fisheries, the amount of water, fish, and of course birds in each varies from year to year.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"La Dombes by Rick Wright, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/17091274840\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/8\/7701\/17091274840_d09dfc9a35_z.jpg\" alt=\"La Dombes\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a quiet, sparsely populated landscape, though, and nobody minds if you simply wander from one to the next, stopping at a wide spot to listen and scan. On my latest visit, I found the ponds of the Dombes as lively as ever, and their wooded edges as noisy.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"blackcap by Rick Wright, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/17389704431\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/8\/7759\/17389704431_a1ba3663bc_z.jpg\" alt=\"blackcap\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Blackcaps\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>nightingales\u00a0<\/strong>were shouting from every thicket, as if in competition (the winner? blackcaps, hands down).\u00a0<strong>Golden orioles\u00a0<\/strong>were back in force, singing their gulping whistles in the poplar canopy and flashing back and forth across the roads; once again I was reminded of how much that species looks and sounds like an oropendola.<\/p>\n<p>And everywhere, everywhere, the exuberant trills\u00a0of the <strong>Eurasian wren<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a title=\"Eurasian wren song by Rick Wright, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/17388326802\/in\/photolist-rxHwhE-suxHKY-sjGVm5-sjGfwS-sjFa2L\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/8\/7716\/17388326802_18607ea381_z.jpg\" alt=\"Eurasian wren song\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click to listen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Out on the water, often feeding just a few feet from the road, were all the expected herons, including somber\u00a0<strong>black-crowned night herons\u00a0<\/strong>and snaky\u00a0<strong>purple herons<\/strong>, and a few shorebirds haunted the muddy edges.\u00a0<strong>Common greenshanks\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>wood sandpipers\u00a0<\/strong>were the most abundant, but there were also\u00a0<strong>ruffs<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>green sandpipers<\/strong>,\u00a0a surprising<strong> whimbrel, spotted redshanks, <\/strong>and a few brash and beautiful<strong>\u00a0common redshanks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"common redshank by Rick Wright, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/16766747744\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8719\/16766747744_02ee7706f5_z.jpg\" alt=\"common redshank\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ducks were scarcer, many of the hens probably already on eggs, the drakes with better things to do than be gawked at; but still there were good numbers of <strong>red-crested pochards\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>garganeys.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Garganey, la Dombes by Rick Wright, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/17090104278\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/8\/7717\/17090104278_1affd79471_z.jpg\" alt=\"Garganey, la Dombes\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the morning warmed, the aerial insectivores came out to play: plenty of\u00a0<strong>barn swallows, house martins,<\/strong> and<strong> sand martins<\/strong>, with a few arriving\u00a0<strong>common swifts<\/strong>. <strong>Bee-eaters<\/strong>, also most likely just coming in, announced themselves with their uncouth buzzes, and\u00a0<strong>whiskered terns, <\/strong>a true Dombes specialty,\u00a0we had with us always.<\/p>\n<p>As always, it was hard to tear myself away. But Burgundy awaited, land of <strong>stone curlews<\/strong> and ancient monasteries, medieval palaces and\u00a0<strong>woodchat shrikes<\/strong>.
