A great hunter and &#8220;puntsman,&#8221; he also &#8212; like so many British &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/75373#page\/181\/mode\/1up\">working-man naturalists<\/a>&#8221; &#8212; made himself invaluable to the ornithologists\u00a0of the day, in his case providing specimens and dates for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/103298#page\/9\/mode\/1up\">Coward and Oldham&#8217;s\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/103298#page\/9\/mode\/1up\">Vertebrate Fauna<\/a> of Cheshire and Liverpool Bay.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Evans died 100 years ago today, having signed on three weeks earlier\u00a0as helmsman and quartermaster of the\u00a0<em>Lusitania<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thomas William Evans\u00a0of Cheshire was a sailor by trade, but his happiest hours were spent in search of waterfowl on the estuary of the River Dee.
