One of the few ornamental elements of the church is a thirteenth-century statue of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child, of the type known\u2014fittingly enough in this case\u2014as \u201cbeautiful Madonnas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Fontenay-Madonna-RW.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9973\" src=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Fontenay-Madonna-RW-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"DSC04555\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Fontenay-Madonna-RW-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Fontenay-Madonna-RW-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some visitors might walk right past it, pausing perhaps to admire the sweetness of the Virgin\u2019s girlish face and the elegant curve of her torso; but a closer look reveals that the smiling Christ Child in her arms holds a live bird.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Fontenay-detail.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9974\" src=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Fontenay-detail-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"DSC04550\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Fontenay-detail-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Fontenay-detail-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Stylized in form, and with no colorful plumage visible, the little bird is nevertheless identifiable: the Child\u2019s pet can only be a European goldfinch. As the Smithsonian ornithologist Herbert Friedmann showed, that species served artists throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance as a symbol of the suffering and death to come.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Raphael-Goldfinch.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9975\" src=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Raphael-Goldfinch-733x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Raphael, Goldfinch\" width=\"600\" height=\"838\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Raphael-Goldfinch-733x1024.jpg 733w, http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Raphael-Goldfinch-215x300.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The stone goldfinch is just like the feathered ones the twelfth-century monks would have seen flitting around the borders of the cloister garden, and it is just like the goldfinches we watch today on the woodland edges and flower-strewn lawns of Fontenay.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/European-goldfinch-RW.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9976\" src=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/European-goldfinch-RW-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"DSC04496\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/European-goldfinch-RW-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/European-goldfinch-RW-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here in Burgundy, and in so many other ancient places around the world, birds, art, and history come together to form a landscape that is far more than the sum of its separate parts.
