{"id":9129,"date":"2014-09-02T00:59:41","date_gmt":"2014-09-02T07:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/?p=9129"},"modified":"2014-08-26T08:26:07","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T15:26:07","slug":"what-remained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/02\/what-remained\/","title":{"rendered":"What Remained"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On August 31, 1914, the world was still inhabited by\u00a0a living passenger pigeon.<\/p>\n<p>Two days later, all we had left were the slightly tacky ornaments of still-Victorian parlors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/36312#page\/139\/mode\/1up\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9130\" src=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-26-at-11.03.22-AM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-08-26 at 11.03.22 AM\" width=\"706\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-26-at-11.03.22-AM.png 706w, http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-26-at-11.03.22-AM-300x230.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These two males, in the collection of <a href=\"http:\/\/archivaria.com\/BusDbios\/BusDbios2.html\">Ottomar Reinecke<\/a>, were shot, each on one side of the international border at Buffalo, New York, in September 1891, &#8220;martyrs,&#8221; as R. Magoon Barnes put it, &#8220;to the fool with a shotgun.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Barnes, of course, wasn&#8217;t calling Reinecke a fool; they were friends, or at least oological colleagues, and neither ever believed that his own activities as a &#8220;scientific&#8221; amateur\u00a0had contributed to the end\u00a0of the pigeon.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, one of the most striking phenomena around the extinction\u00a0of this species is the blithe hypocrisy of the collectors of the day. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/36312#page\/141\/mode\/1up\">Reinecke<\/a>, characteristically, blamed the &#8220;ruthless extirpation&#8221; on netting and the &#8220;professional plundering of nests.&#8221; \u00a0 Barnes&#8217;s reproach of\u00a0his fellow citizens was posted in the window of his law office in Chicago &#8212; accompanied by one of the mounts from his extensive private collection.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s true: No museum collector and no private amateur ever took\u00a0anything like the numbers of pigeons slaughtered by the farm boys and the pothunters.
