The Archiater&#8217;s personal copy of the 1766 Twelfth Edition of the <em>Systema naturae, <\/em>though, made its way into the <a href=\"http:\/\/holliscatalog.harvard.edu\/\">library of Harvard&#8217;s\u00a0Arnold Arboretum<\/a>, and thence, by one of those now everyday e-miracles that still leaves me shaking my head in grateful disbelief,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/bibliography\/68927#\/summary\">to the internet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Like so many copies of the\u00a0<em>Systema\u00a0<\/em>in all its editions, this one is well annotated. Most of the notes are, as expected, bibliographic. But there are a few more substantive manuscript additions; my favorite is this one:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the Arctic regions, the birds retreat\u00a0once every twenty-four hours\u00a0to sleep.
