I once killed a specimen so newly from the nest as to cause me to believe that it had been hatched in the vicinity.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Coues does not tell his reader where that specimen ended up, but I think I know.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8510\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8510\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/T17066.1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8510\" alt=\"Photograph courtesy of National Museums Liverpool, Zoology, World Museum. \" src=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/T17066.1.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/T17066.1.jpg 800w, http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/T17066.1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8510\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photograph courtesy of National Museums Liverpool, Zoology, World Museum.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Coues collected this fresh juvenile <strong>Passenger Pigeon<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/33180#page\/192\/mode\/1up\">aged<\/a> by the &#8220;white crescentic edges of the feathers, especially on back and wings,&#8221; at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defense.gov\/specials\/heroes\/history1.html\">Old Soldiers&#8217; Home in Washington<\/a> on October 14, 1859. A quarter of a century later, Coues and his old field companion Webster Prentiss would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/49695#page\/103\/mode\/1up\">recall that autumn<\/a> as &#8220;the last large flight we remember&#8221; in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The skin bore the number 450 in Coues&#8217;s personal cabinet, but somehow made its way into the famously vast collections of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/stream\/ibis29brit#page\/n207\/mode\/2up\">H.B. Tristram<\/a>, where it was assigned the label 17066.
