{"id":8413,"date":"2014-02-28T16:27:47","date_gmt":"2014-02-28T23:27:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/?p=8413"},"modified":"2014-02-28T16:27:47","modified_gmt":"2014-02-28T23:27:47","slug":"red-bellied-woodpecker-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/2014\/02\/28\/red-bellied-woodpecker-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Red-bellied Woodpecker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Red-bellied Woodpecker by Rick Wright, Tours and Private Guiding, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/12843921964\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Red-bellied Woodpecker\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7415\/12843921964_69e3edd801.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been watching\u00a0<strong>Red-bellied Woodpeckers\u00a0<\/strong>since way back in\u00a0<em>Centurus\u00a0<\/em>days, and we weren&#8217;t at all surprised to see this one using the rock-hard ice crust of our backyard as an anvil for opening tough oilseeds this morning.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever I see this species on the ground, I&#8217;m reminded of a red-belly I saw years ago in eastern Nebraska, gleaning something or other from among the ballast stones on a railroad track. As I watched, the bird actually grasped one of the pieces of pink quartzite in its bill and moved it to the side; I didn&#8217;t measure the stone, or keep it, and I don&#8217;t know what the standard size of ballast is, but I have it in memory as more than two inches across.<\/p>\n<p>That impressed me.
