A few years ago, Kenn Kaufman pointed out<\/a> that the “photo quiz” was not an innovation of\u00a0Birding<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0British Birds<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0Continental Birdlife<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

No, the first birding photo quiz appeared in Bird-Lore <\/em>in December 1900, with the intention, as Frank Chapman put it,<\/p>\n

of arousing the student’s curiosity [and] impressing the bird’s characters on [her or ] his mind far more strongly than if its name were given with its picture.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In honor of the sesquicentennial of Chapman’s birth, coming up this summer, we’ll be “re-running” the\u00a0Bird-Lore\u00a0<\/em>quizzes on and off over the next months.<\/p>\n
