Along with clowns, equestrian artists, and two camels, the show also included a male Asian elephant, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elephant.se\/database2.php?elephant_id=5378\">Pizarro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pizarro <a href=\"http:\/\/www.circushistory.org\/Olympians\/OlympiansS1.htm\">killed a man in Louisiana<\/a> in March 1845, but remained active as a performer.<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, on April 15, 1847, the animal&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ushistory.org\/philadelphia\/timeline\/1847.htm\">keepers forced Pizarro and a second elephant, Virginius, into the water<\/a> at Greenwich Point, Pennsylvania, hoping that they would swim across the Delaware to Gloucester Point.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.elephant.se\/database2.php?elephant_id=5378\">Both drowned<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/etc.usf.edu\/clipart\/12600\/12627\/elephant_12627_md.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/etc.usf.edu\/clipart\/12600\/12627\/elephant_12627_md.gif\" width=\"640\" height=\"482\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On this date in 1839,&nbsp;Raymond and Waring opened Cooke&#8217;s Circus in Philadelphia.
