Between them, there&#8217;s nothing my brother and my two sisters can&#8217;t help us out with &#8212; generously enough, not one of them has ever come back to me with the request for one of <em style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">my<\/em> skills. I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ve got some, somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>It must have been even tougher for John Ridgway, the younger brother of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buteobooks.com\/product\/13676.html\">one of North America&#8217;s most famous and most productive ornithologists<\/a>. An accomplished taxidermist and illustrator, John Ridgway worked at \u00a0the National Museum and for the USGS; he is best known today, if at all, for the series of cards he painted for Singer Sewing Machines.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8068\/8165025413_d655bc540f_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"484\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/sora.unm.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/journals\/auk\/v071n02\/p0236-p0238.pdf\">short obituary<\/a> that appeared in the <em>Auk<\/em>\u00a0&#8212; more than six years after Ridgway&#8217;s death in 1947 &#8212; provides a list of some of the ornithological works that he illustrated. The color plates in Turner&#8217;s 1886\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/85940\"><em>Alaska<\/em><\/a> seem to have been a cooperative effort, signed by both John and Robert Ridgway:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4635\" src=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Screen-Shot-2013-01-12-at-12.13.20-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-01-12 at 12.13.20 PM\" width=\"640\" height=\"543\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Screen-Shot-2013-01-12-at-12.13.20-PM.png 640w, http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Screen-Shot-2013-01-12-at-12.13.20-PM-300x254.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The younger Ridgway alone was responsible for the paintings &#8212; old-fashioned but often dramatic &#8212; in Fisher&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/51526\"><em>Hawks and Owls<\/em><\/a> of 1893:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4636\" src=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/hawksowlsofunite00fish_0070.jpg\" alt=\"hawksowlsofunite00fish_0070\" width=\"640\" height=\"1058\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/hawksowlsofunite00fish_0070.jpg 640w, http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/hawksowlsofunite00fish_0070-181x300.jpg 181w, http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/hawksowlsofunite00fish_0070-619x1024.jpg 619w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Oddly enough, Palmer&#8217;s obituary leaves unmentioned the one great work for which serious birders still remember Ridgway. <a href=\"http:\/\/vertebrates.si.edu\/birds\/Hall_of_fame\/InMemoriamPDFs\/Bendire.pdf\">Charles Bendire<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/bibliography\/17699\"><em>Life Histories<\/em><\/a> began to appear in 1892; the two volumes that were completed and published remained the authoritative work of their kind until Bent (and then, of course, BNA).<\/p>\n<p>The paintings were produced by Ridgway, whom <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/57082#page\/28\/mode\/1up\">Bendire praises<\/a> for his &#8220;skill and painstaking care.&#8221; \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sora.unm.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/journals\/auk\/v039n01\/p0001-p0014.pdf\">Joel A. Allen<\/a> wrote that the plates were &#8220;[un]equalled in artistic effect or in faithfulness of execution,&#8221; while J.C. Merrill said simply &#8220;no superior work has ever been done.&#8221; Those encomia and others were cited by Harry Harris in 1927, in his account of <a href=\"http:\/\/sora.unm.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/journals\/condor\/v029n04\/p0177-p0181.pdf\">an interview with Ridgway<\/a>, who was then at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhm.org\/site\/\">Los Angeles County Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Harris adds his own assessment of the egg plates, &#8220;the outstanding and pre-eminent achievement in the entire field of oological illustration.&#8221; He may well be right, as a look at Ridgway&#8217;s paintings of the eggs (numbers 1-6) of the <strong>Common Nighthawk<\/strong> shows.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4637\" src=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/lifehistoriesofn00bend_0541.jpg\" alt=\"lifehistoriesofn00bend_0541\" width=\"640\" height=\"954\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/lifehistoriesofn00bend_0541.jpg 640w, http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/lifehistoriesofn00bend_0541-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/50299#page\/183\/mode\/1up\">Bendire calls<\/a> &#8220;the egg of the Nighthawk one of the most difficult ones known to [him] to describe satisfactorily.&#8221; The eggs differ &#8220;endlessly&#8221; in shape, ground color, and markings, a range of variation Ridgway&#8217;s painting captures very well indeed &#8212; and probably better than his more famous brother could have done.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/aba.org\/boy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Common-Nighthawk-Web-Badge-2013-ABA-Bird-of-the-Year.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"469\" height=\"478\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the brother of three immensely talented and enormously capable (and all very different, thankfully) siblings, I know what it&#8217;s like to be in the shadows sometimes.
