{"id":4367,"date":"2012-11-17T09:53:22","date_gmt":"2012-11-17T16:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/?p=4367"},"modified":"2020-01-21T18:45:35","modified_gmt":"2020-01-21T23:45:35","slug":"birds-that-glow-in-the-dark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/17\/birds-that-glow-in-the-dark\/","title":{"rendered":"Birds That Glow in the Dark"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know &#8212; I did not &#8212; that the American Bittern glows in the dark?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8202\/8193871164_68a33cb6aa_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"344\"><\/p>\n<p>At least <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=bBiZiaoQNi4C&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re told<\/a> by &#8220;several gentlemen of undoubted veracity, and especially by Mr. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/981519\">Franklin Peale<\/a>, the proprietor of the Philadelphia Museum&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I was much interested with an account I heard the other day of a bird, a species of heron. I believe it is called by Wilson, in his <em>Ornithology<\/em>, the Great American Bittern; but, what is very extraordinary, he omits to mention a most interesting and remarkable circumstance attending it, which is, that it has the power of emitting a light from its breast, equal to the light of a common torch, which illuminates the water, so as to enable it to discover its prey. As this circumstance is not mentioned by any of the naturalists that I have ever read, I had a difficulty in believing the fact, and took some trouble to ascertain the truth, which has been confirmed to me by several gentlemen&#8230;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This account, received by Mrs. C. Hackney from a Philadelphia correspondent in 1828, was deemed sufficiently noteworthy to be <a href=\"http:\/\/bookprep.com\/read\/ornithologiaorbi00jennuoft\">published in the <em>Magazine of Natural History<\/em><\/a>, and drew comment the following March from R.A. Bridgewater, who <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=bBiZiaoQNi4C&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">suggested<\/a> that the light was generated &#8220;possibly by some electrical operation.&#8221; Lesson, on the other hand, <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=HPw9AAAAcAAJ&amp;pg=PA570&amp;lpg=PA570&amp;dq=franklin+peale+bittern&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=MpaqJPng8q&amp;sig=GLSfoZV6W6gCZQ7hao8RKVW3Vj0&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=RMKnUNLUAsrF0QGkooCACQ&amp;ved=0CFAQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&amp;q=franklin%20peale%20bittern&amp;f=false\">wondered<\/a> whether it might be produced &#8220;de son estomac.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Not sure why, if that&#8217;s true, my photo of the bird above, from Reifel Refuge a couple of years ago, should be so dark and blurry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know &#8212; I did not &#8212; that the American Bittern glows in the dark?
