{"id":4301,"date":"2012-11-05T12:08:09","date_gmt":"2012-11-05T19:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/?p=4301"},"modified":"2016-06-06T12:50:18","modified_gmt":"2016-06-06T19:50:18","slug":"other-peoples-bird-books-mise-en-abime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/05\/other-peoples-bird-books-mise-en-abime\/","title":{"rendered":"Other People&#8217;s Bird Books: Mise en ab\u00eeme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Autographs don&#8217;t thrill me the way I think they&#8217;re supposed to.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8055\/8125700476_0d9ec45c33_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"424\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This copy of Stiles and Skutch was a gift from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ludlow_Griscom_Award\">our friend Ruth<\/a>, who on a visit to Costa Rica in February 1994 had the title page signed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afonet.org\/grants\/skutchafo.html\">the 90-year-old author<\/a> and &#8212; a neat touch &#8212; his wife. I cherish the book for that simple association, of course, but even more for the photos Ruth pasted in.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8325\/8125700320_0d64b1d500_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"416\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here Ruth and Skutch examine plate 46. Her handwritten annotations on the facing key indicate that on that day, she and the ornithologist had seen the <strong>Shining Honeycreeper, <\/strong>the<strong> Green Honeycreeper, <\/strong>and the<strong> Speckled Tanager<\/strong>, among many other species.<\/p>\n<p>And here:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8190\/8125678579_7e8da1d9d8_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alexander Skutch autographs the very book into which Ruth, just visible, I think, in the background, inserted this photo.<\/p>\n<p>I saw these pictures when Ruth gave me the book, and asked whether she didn&#8217;t want to keep them. No, she said, they belong to the book.
