{"id":3525,"date":"2011-03-16T06:47:59","date_gmt":"2011-03-16T13:47:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/?p=3525"},"modified":"2018-04-07T21:29:05","modified_gmt":"2018-04-08T04:29:05","slug":"more-gulls-backs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/16\/more-gulls-backs\/","title":{"rendered":"More Gull&#8217;s Backs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gellert and I spent a little time looking at gulls yesterday at Jericho Park, as usual relishing the irony of sorting through the abundant <strong>Mew Gulls <\/strong>in search of <strong>Ring-billed Gulls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5055\/5531547667_2614dd6dae_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" height=\"457\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The light on a misty morning was perfect for looking at variation in back color, of which Mew Gulls, of course, show considerable. I think of Ring-billed Gulls as much more consistently colored, adults (almost!) invariably pale gray, which made the duo in the photo all the more interesting. From whatever angle I chose, the left-hand bird remained conspicuously dark-mantled; to my surprise, the photo came out quite close to naked-eye reality.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t &#8220;mean&#8221; anything, but it&#8217;s still fun to discover a little bit of variation in even the most common species.
