{"id":3375,"date":"2010-12-13T20:57:24","date_gmt":"2010-12-14T03:57:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/?p=3375"},"modified":"2018-04-07T21:29:05","modified_gmt":"2018-04-08T04:29:05","slug":"an-afternoon-at-jericho-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/13\/an-afternoon-at-jericho-beach\/","title":{"rendered":"An Afternoon at Jericho Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gellert and I set out this noon to take as many lousy photos of distant <strong>Eurasian Wigeon <\/strong>as possible.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5245\/5258684431_fac91c14dd_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With a goal like that, there&#8217;s no place like Jericho Park, where at least one female&#8211;perhaps the same female as in today&#8217;s dozens of really, truly, phenomenally lousy photos&#8211;has been hanging out for a month or more. Happily, my intention wasn&#8217;t aesthetic but educational: I&#8217;ve now got plenty of material to pore over as I try to learn more about identifying these birds.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5281\/5258697611_e115ee3b81_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not even a Labrador retriever can watch ducks indefinitely (though he was very good through the whole exercise), so we walked out on the crab pier to see what was to see.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5206\/5258674503_ca7eb70d32_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lone fisherman out there had attracted a lone first-cycle <strong>Bonaparte&#8217;s Gull<\/strong>, along with the usual raggedy assortment of <strong>Glaucous-winged-<\/strong>type <strong>Gulls. <\/strong>We looked carefully for anything Westernish, but couldn&#8217;t come up with anything better than this hybrid with fairly dark wingtips and a slightly brighter than usual bill.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5001\/5259286716_53dc2b8088_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pretty unconvincing. Nothing to write home about, this one!<\/p>\n<p>Gellert finally grew impatient.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5041\/5259283054_76300be5b0_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So we checked the ponds, where there was a single drake <strong>Bufflehead<\/strong>, another 100 or so <strong>American Wigeon<\/strong>, and a grumpy-looking <strong>Great Blue Heron <\/strong>having a post-prandial preen.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5082\/5259314530_f7a29dfa20_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Common stuff, usual stuff, wonderful stuff!
