I didn&#8217;t find any today at Reifel Refuge, but I did run across this fine-looking &#8220;pied&#8221; male American.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4144\/5149225483_389f3c649a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Birds like this&#8211;where the <a href=\"http:\/\/bna.birds.cornell.edu\/bna\/species\/401\/galleries\/figures\/figure-5\/image_popup_view\">ground color of the head<\/a> is a nearly unmarked white or rich cream&#8211;are rarish, but they&#8217;re <a href=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/30\/x-treme-wigeon\/#comments\">known throughout western North America<\/a>. Surprisingly, there remains very little written about this variant.
