{"id":2988,"date":"2010-04-15T09:03:10","date_gmt":"2010-04-15T16:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/?p=2988"},"modified":"2018-04-07T21:29:31","modified_gmt":"2018-04-08T04:29:31","slug":"the-conscience-of-a-birder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/15\/the-conscience-of-a-birder\/","title":{"rendered":"The Conscience of a Birder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, rats.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4050\/4521095227_af4156b736.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As the breathless tone of yesterday&#8217;s entry reveals, I was excited yesterday morning at Jericho Park to find the bird above, which I gleefully ticked off as a Western Gull&#8211;or something very, very close to it.<\/p>\n<p>As I pondered, though, the pale eye and, especially, the orange tint to the orbital ring started to worry me. I sent the photos off to a couple of friends with massively more expertise and experience than I&#8217;ll ever have with these birds, and the answers came in: Steve said he would have called it a hybrid &#8220;but who can really tell,&#8221; and Guy agreed, noting among other things that the mantle was too pale even for northern <em>occidentalis<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So this one goes down as a dark hybrid or introgressant, and my search for a pure Western Gull in British Columbia continues.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4029\/4521109715_d857ebcb36.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"449\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I now read a different meaning into the bird&#8217;s posture.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, rats.
