The approach is similar to that we&#8217;ve been taking for years now in Provence, Catalonia, and Germnay: birds provide the <em>focus <\/em>for the itinerary, but the <em>experience <\/em>is in getting to know a whole landscape, its history, its culture, and above all its art.<\/p>\n<p>My co-leader <a href=\"http:\/\/wingsbirds.com\/leaders\/view\/75\">Marco Valtriani<\/a> and I spent a few days after my Provence tour scouting our route. It promises to be a good one, starting in the dramatically beautiful Apennines and Apuan Alpsarchaeological ending up in\u00a0the archaeological and\u00a0natural riches of southern Etruria. Some images from some of the localities we&#8217;ll be exploring:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3308\/3625921054_6b633db304.jpg?v=1245982825\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The tiny village of Branuccio, high in the Apennines.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3187\/3625911210_e055fc6725.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lobby of our hotel in Castelnuovo, tucked into the Garfagnana between the mountain ranges and along the Serchio, where <strong>Gray Wagtails <\/strong>flit beneath the city&#8217;s many bridges.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3317\/3625094821_3d3c5cbd12.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The garden, as seen from the pool of our Castelnuovo hotel.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3327\/3625908234_081f30e471.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Apuan Alps&#8211;wow.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3660\/3625903352_e97097c3cb.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ceiling of the renowned church of Codiponte&#8211;and one of the proto-Romanesque capitals for which it is so famous:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3406\/3625901494_79f8e1f657.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Birders aren&#8217;t the only ones who enjoy the bright skies and warm days of Tuscany:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3394\/3625075535_df5d6f0aef.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Living up to its name, <strong>Common Redstart <\/strong>is an abundant yard bird in Tuscan villages.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3406\/3625073479_b295b5d42c.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even in the mountains, our birding is\u00a0relaxed and easy-paced, on wide, level paths and roads.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3183\/3625879208_c443697f6f.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mountain streams can be good birding; this one, at Equi Therme, produced <strong>Crag Martin <\/strong>and <strong>White-throated Dipper <\/strong>during our scouting. Three <strong>Peregrine Falcons <\/strong>appeared high above as we left, too.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2447\/3625868576_6e3618e328.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3374\/3625035623_bec06f62eb.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now rare over much of their former range to the north, <strong>Red-backed Shrikes <\/strong>are reliably found in any open habitat. This is the male of a pair that was almost certainly nesting in the denser vegetation in the background.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3357\/3625026781_7bfcacbafc.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It looks like snow, but it&#8217;s bright white marble at the edge of a quarry that&#8217;s been worked since antiquity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3625\/3625841046_3fce0cfd24.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s always time for a coffee break on a Birds and Art tour.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2445\/3625013419_64fc3dc831.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll visit the fifteenth-century pilgrim hostel of San Pellegrino (not the source of the water!).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2449\/3624978953_a9c2400511.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here as everywhere else in Tuscany, we&#8217;ll be following in some pretty illustrious footsteps.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3364\/3624977893_97dbe0ce91.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>European Bee-eaters <\/strong>abound in coastal areas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3189\/3624951137_977efab05a.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Orbetello Lagoon and the Argentario Promontory are major sites on our itinerary. They&#8217;ll both be crawling with migrants in May; on our June visit, notable species here included <strong>Common Shelduck<\/strong>, <strong>Eurasian Curlew<\/strong>, <strong>Stonechat<\/strong>, and <strong>Little Tern<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2484\/3625766006_5bddd27c0c.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not all culture is high culture, I suppose. (Anybody else remember the blue whale on the way to Higbee Beach?)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3358\/3625764032_820f9b3618.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our hotel near Manciano, where we&#8217;ll be spending the last five\u00a0nights of the tour without the annoyance of packing and repacking, is a remodeled Tuscan estate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3337\/3625761556_d9e32de234.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And the views? Not bad.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3396\/3624942111_a4e7433ff1.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This unassuming little pond just outside Albinia is famous for the rarities that have occurred there.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2470\/3625714852_f7cc5b68e7.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But on this visit we found the birding better at the old salt pans in Tarquinia.
