In 1590, eight years after the promulgation of the new Gregorian calendar, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gedaechtnisdeslandes.at\/personen\/action\/show\/controller\/Person\/?tx_gdl_gdl%5Bperson%5d=683\">Austrian polymath Johann Rasch<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/babel.hathitrust.org\/cgi\/pt?id=njp.32101008426049;view=1up;seq=38\">observed that<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>they say as a general rule that the birds marry every year on St. Vincent&#8217;s Day&#8230;. When last year and in the years before that certain people carefully monitored the birds, they found that they gathered into pairs and perched together on St. Vincent&#8217;s Day according to the new calendar, not according to the old one.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How did they do it? According to Rasch, these were<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Catholic birds, so much more intelligent than so many coarse and stupid humans!
