We were especially happy this time that we could offer a couple of our new birding friends a ride from the airport, sparing them the train ride and giving us some greatly appreciated company on the hour&#8217;s drive.<\/p>\n<p>As waited for our room keys, a bit of sleepitude overcame one of us.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Alison arrives in Arles\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/26761916357\/in\/dateposted\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/881\/26761916357_ec5e4f9e4f_z.jpg\" alt=\"Alison arrives in Arles\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Not me, though. Once the vehicles were parked, our suitcases in the room, and the optics unpacked, it was time to make some preparations. I took it as a good sign that a <strong>Eurasian tree sparrow\u00a0<\/strong>was hanging out around the corner from our hotel; I can&#8217;t remember ever having seen that so attractive species right here in the city.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Eurasian Tree Sparrow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/39058484585\/in\/photolist-EZN2Zr-DQeVTx-DN4Jqf-22vsWG2-rpTP9y-np3XgC-np3bRA-nfrLiW-b81CtZ-b3KdGz-b3Ke8H-b3Kep8\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4764\/39058484585_3c5fb1e344_z.jpg\" alt=\"Eurasian Tree Sparrow\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>(This one was on the edge of town a couple of springs ago.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Heartened, we made reservations for our first dinner together as a group &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.fr\/maps\/uv?hl=fr&amp;pb=!1s0x12b6766ad2835b07:0x3b8a7ffc88834b72!2m22!2m2!1i80!2i80!3m1!2i20!16m16!1b1!2m2!1m1!1e1!2m2!1m1!1e3!2m2!1m1!1e5!2m2!1m1!1e4!2m2!1m1!1e6!3m1!7e115!4shttps:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/p\/AF1QipPd2xgyPdkqu4Cle1OtD3e7MXxYfqBEYdwjBD0t%3Dw568-h320-k-no!5sla+paillotte+arles+-+Recherche+Google&amp;imagekey=!1e10!2sAF1QipPd2xgyPdkqu4Cle1OtD3e7MXxYfqBEYdwjBD0t&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwinicicudDaAhUMOhQKHRf5CEIQoioInAEwCg\">La Paillotte<\/a>, one of our old favorites &#8212; and took a quick walk to confirm the opening hours and days of the other restaurants we&#8217;re so much looking forward to eating at.<\/p>\n<p>Birding spots, too, change from year to year, so we set forth to check the conditions at a couple of nearby sites in the Camargue. Not only do water levels vary, but in some years the vegetation is short, in others high enough to make it impractical, even impossible, to look into certain of the marshes with a group.<\/p>\n<p>Looks good this year, though, even if one of the abundant nutrias decided that dry and newly disked might be worth a look.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"nutria\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/41589461642\/in\/dateposted\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/904\/41589461642_5b10e862bb_z.jpg\" alt=\"nutria\" width=\"640\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>We concentrated on more productive habitats, enjoying the usual\u00a0<strong>stonechats, Iberian wagtails, Cetti&#8217;s warblers, zitting cisticolas, purple herons, glossy ibis&#8230;.\u00a0<\/strong>The list went on and on. On the water we were happy to see a couple of\u00a0<strong>garganey<\/strong>, and one of the big reed beds offered up a glimpse of a\u00a0<strong>bearded tit<\/strong> &#8212; neither species a &#8220;gimme&#8221; on this tour by any means.\u00a0<strong>Black-headed <\/strong>and<strong> Mediterranean gulls\u00a0<\/strong>were almost continuously in view, and the newly arrived\u00a0<strong>common terns<\/strong> were joined by a <strong>gull-billed tern<\/strong> or two, that last species sometimes tricky to find on demand.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"short-toed eagle April 2018\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/40919276594\/in\/dateposted\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/827\/40919276594_fd7eb69b9a_z.jpg\" alt=\"short-toed eagle April 2018\" width=\"452\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a good season for raptors in the Camargue, and though we didn&#8217;t see many individuals this afternoon, it was fun to get to watch\u00a0<strong>marsh harriers\u00a0<\/strong>and a couple of\u00a0<strong>short-toed snake eagles<\/strong>, including this perched bird being harassed by <strong>barn swallows, European starlings,\u00a0<\/strong>and a very persistent\u00a0<strong>common kestrel<\/strong>. (Not sure why my photos didn&#8217;t work out; the bird wasn&#8217;t nearly as far away as this image suggests.)<\/p>\n<p>Sleepiness seems to be followed invariably by hunger. We&#8217;d meant to come back to Arles for an early supper, but the beach traffic was daunting, so we dropped in at the domaine Ricard in M\u00e9janes, where\u00a0<strong>common nightingales\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>flamingos\u00a0<\/strong>serenaded us &#8212; one species slightly more tuneful than the other &#8212; while we ate on the patio.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Alison's supper Me?janes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/26761917427\/in\/dateposted\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/906\/26761917427_d354682864_z.jpg\" alt=\"Alison's supper Me?janes\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Hard to beat spring in Provence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A long day but an easy trip from Newark to Arles, by way of Paris and Marseille.
