Leverk\u00fchn studied in Kiel, Strasbourg, and Munich, and practiced medicine in that last city before\u00a0accepting an\u00a0appointment\u00a0as privy secretary to Ferdinand I of Bulgaria in 1892. Ferdinand was an enthusiastic botanist and entomologist, and just a month after Leverk\u00fchn&#8217;s arrival in Sofia,\u00a0his job description was altered to make him\u00a0director of the prince&#8217;s extensive natural historical collections.<\/p>\n<p>Leverk\u00fchn&#8217;s own interests were ornithological. Ferdinand funded collecting expeditions across western and central Europe and to Russia and Turkey, the fruits of which filled the drawers and cases of the new <a href=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/08\/making-up-post-mortem\/\">museum<\/a> built under Leverk\u00fchn&#8217;s direction.<\/p>\n<p>Like most birders then and now, Leverk\u00fchn\u00a0found as much satisfaction in the library as in the field. By\u00a01905,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>in the blossom of his best manly years, at the center of a rich circle of influence, and amid the pleasures of scholarly creativity,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>he was about to embark on what would have been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/35176#page\/114\/mode\/1up\">one of the greatest bibliographic works<\/a> in the ornithological tradition. It was not to be, though.
