Just such a day was <a href=\"https:\/\/sora.unm.edu\/node\/96307\">New Year&#8217;s Eve 1916<\/a>, when <a href=\"https:\/\/sora.unm.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/journals\/auk\/v082n02\/p0322-p0326.pdf\">Laurence M. Huey<\/a> went out to set some mammal\u00a0traps in his yard, a few miles north of Bard.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I noticed a thrasher scratching on the shady side of a\u00a0neighbor&#8217;s wood pile. On collecting the bird, I was surprised to find it to be a Palmer Thrasher.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The bird Huey shot was the first record of the species ever in California, where <a href=\"http:\/\/wfopublications.org\/Rare_Birds\/Curve-billed_Thrasher\/Curve-billed_Thrasher.html\">it is still\u00a0a rarity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A fine way to end the year &#8212; less so, perhaps, for that adult female thrasher, now reposing in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sdnhm.org\/science\/birds-and-mammals\/collections\/\">San Diego Natural History Museum.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even a century ago, it was a red-letter day when a bird was added to the California list.
