I learned to bird there, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ventbird.com\/birding-tour\/2017\/03\/11\/nebraska-platte-river-sandhill-cranes-prairie-grousehttp:\/\/www.ventbird.com\/birding-tour\/2017\/03\/11\/nebraska-platte-river-sandhill-cranes-prairie-grouse\">I go back every spring<\/a> &#8212; and whenever else I can &#8212; to catch up with the birds and the trees and the people I have been so fond of so long.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Rick at Fontenelle Forest\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/4495469784\/in\/photolist-7Rccet-7RcbWr-7RfsQS-7RfsZ1-7RfsFW-7RfsxJ-7RcABL-7RcASj-7R9jPv-7R9jyR-7Rcyth-7RcB7b-7R9bKK-7Rctd9-7R9bRx-7Rcsk9-7Rcss7-7R9boF-7RcrPy-7RcrGo-7SfdcC-7RcrxW-7R9acn-7R9a4a-7R9dU4-7R9dkH-7R9dtr-7RctmQ-7R9chB-6kt6Tv-6kxg1S-6kt6pg-6kt6CR-6kt624-6kt5yP-6kt68F-6kxeWA-6kt5kp-6kt5sr-6mnXde-6kx5CQ-6kx2Wo-6kx2FW-6ksShB-6ksNf6-6kx2zo-6kx2kb-6ksN7g-6kx2t3-6mnPmt\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4038\/4495469784_79fec66b57_z.jpg\" alt=\"Rick at Fontenelle Forest\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fontenelle Forest was <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcommons.unl.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1917&amp;context=nebbirdrev\">officially dedicated one hundred years ago this afternoon<\/a>, when\u00a0three thousand people gathered to celebrate this precious chunk of woodland just south of the largest city on the northern Great Plains.<\/p>\n<p>The program began &#8212; perhaps inevitably &#8212; with a performance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kMTET0xS50k\">Grieg&#8217;s &#8220;Morgenstimmung<\/a>.&#8221; A certain Miss Hazel Silver then offered a piece less familiar to us (or at least to me) now, &#8220;The Hermit Thrush,&#8221; by <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=T0d9Jbduu3UC&amp;pg=PA236&amp;lpg=PA236&amp;dq=f.s.+converse+composer&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=00whLqRccu&amp;sig=3Paam_Lx4RYJ2JQTby5sxSPq8qM&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwik7YXh6a3NAhXCTSYKHaeHAn8Q6AEIRDAH#v=onepage&amp;q=f.s.%20converse%20composer&amp;f=false\">F.S. Converse<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1989\/01\/07\/obituaries\/arvia-mackaye-ege-a-poet-is-dead-at-86.html\">Arvia MacKaye<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It seemed to be a voice of love\/\u00a0That always had loved me&#8230; \/ My wandering love, lost yet forever heard.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then came the afternoon&#8217;s prime attraction, a performance of Percy MacKaye&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sanctuary-bird-masque-Percy-MacKaye\/dp\/B00YHWA520\">Sanctuary<\/a>&#8221; with an epilogue specially composed for the occasion.
