{"id":10510,"date":"2016-03-06T06:51:35","date_gmt":"2016-03-06T13:51:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/?p=10510"},"modified":"2016-03-06T06:51:35","modified_gmt":"2016-03-06T13:51:35","slug":"early-birds-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/06\/early-birds-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Early Birds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"DSC09442\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/25187103539\/in\/photostream\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1665\/25187103539_4e831a4c03.jpg\" alt=\"DSC09442\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I felt even more virtuous than usual when I arrived at <a href=\"http:\/\/ebird.org\/ebird\/hotspot\/L207576\">Brookdale Park<\/a> this morning to find that I was\u00a0the first birder of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Or so I thought.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"merlin\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/25259058520\/in\/photostream\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1691\/25259058520_02224f7664.jpg\" alt=\"merlin\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This female <strong>merlin<\/strong>, presumably the same bird that has been hanging around most of the winter and quite possibly the same bird that I had seen a day earlier in downtown Montclair, had already taken a commanding perch over my &#8212; or I guess I should say our &#8212; sparrow patch.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"sharp-shinned hawk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/25528529386\/in\/photostream\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1659\/25528529386_2ca4781aba.jpg\" alt=\"sharp-shinned hawk\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A couple of hundred yards away, this little male\u00a0<strong>sharp-shinned hawk\u00a0<\/strong>kept watch over the same half acre of weeds.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of my competitors moved in the hour and a half I was there, but it was evident nonetheless that they and the other raptors wintering and passing through the park of late are eating well.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"mourning dove\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/25187121469\/in\/photostream\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1617\/25187121469_5257fb58c1.jpg\" alt=\"mourning dove\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m happy to share.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Brookdale Park magic edge in March\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/24924141784\/in\/photostream\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1612\/24924141784_9794035d2a.jpg\" alt=\"Brookdale Park magic edge in March\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I felt even more virtuous than usual when I arrived at Brookdale Park this morning to find that I was\u00a0the first birder of the day.
