His personal library &#8212; eventually the <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.u-strasbg.fr\/hommes\/biographies\/biographies3.htm\">foundation of the library of the Strasbourg Museum<\/a> of Natural History and now in large part held in\u00a0the university library of the city &#8212; was notable for its completeness and for the care with which he annotated the books, many of them in great and obsessive detail.<\/p>\n<p>Hermann&#8217;s copy of the Pomeranian ornithologist Jacob Theodor <a href=\"http:\/\/docnum.unistra.fr\/cdm\/compoundobject\/collection\/coll13\/id\/160043\/rec\/5\">Klein&#8217;s <em>Prodromus<\/em><\/a> is disappointingly clean. A Latin note on the flyleaf, though, reveals his bibliographic sophistication:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the images are missing in the German edition of Reyger, though that is the more authoritative text of the two, so much so that it is worth acquiring both editions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Among those engravings\u00a0are some of the most uncanny images in the history of ornithological illustration.
