{"id":10388,"date":"2015-10-06T02:29:48","date_gmt":"2015-10-06T09:29:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/?p=10388"},"modified":"2015-10-06T08:15:56","modified_gmt":"2015-10-06T15:15:56","slug":"the-long-way-around","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/06\/the-long-way-around\/","title":{"rendered":"The Long Way Around"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"eastern wood-pewee\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/21942115216\/in\/dateposted\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/728\/21942115216_f377e5f750_z.jpg\" alt=\"eastern wood-pewee\" width=\"640\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At this season, every\u00a0<strong>eastern wood-pewee<\/strong> &#8212; like this on in Brookdale Park early yesterday morning &#8212; could be the last of the year at our latitude.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been birding long enough that the name seems &#8220;normal&#8221; to me, but new birders and non-birders find it amusing that there is a tiny bird named &#8220;pewee.&#8221; And so we explain: in the summer, this flycatcher sings its\u00a0<em>pee-a-wee<\/em> over and over and over. Aha. Everything&#8217;s clear.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the only explanation floating around for the name, though. Two hundred years ago, Louis-Pierre Vieillot had another theory:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The name &#8220;pewit&#8221; given to this bird by the Americans comes from the fact that when it ruffles the feathers of its head, it appears to be adorned with a sort of crest,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>a crest distantly recalling\u00a0that of the original pewit, the\u00a0<strong>northern lapwing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At this season, every\u00a0eastern wood-pewee &#8212; like this on in Brookdale Park early yesterday morning &#8212; could be the last of the year at our latitude.
