A dozen\u00a0years before Wilson even thought about coming to America, Thomas Pennant in his account of the bird not only mentioned but transcribed the common call in English syllables &#8212; not the song, but the call, that familiar husky chirp,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>shep, shep.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Pennant, working from specimens sent from the US by Ashton Blackburn, tells us that the bird is<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>called in New York, the Shepherd, from its note.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Something new, every day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve always assumed that the first description of the vocalizations of the\u00a0song sparrow\u00a0was Alexander Wilson&#8217;s in the\u00a0American Ornithology.
