{"id":10074,"date":"2015-06-17T15:27:49","date_gmt":"2015-06-17T22:27:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/?p=10074"},"modified":"2018-06-23T07:48:13","modified_gmt":"2018-06-23T14:48:13","slug":"other-peoples-bird-books-the-hendersons-of-press","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/2015\/06\/17\/other-peoples-bird-books-the-hendersons-of-press\/","title":{"rendered":"Other People&#8217;s Bird Books: The Hendersons of Press"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Thomas Henderson of Press, Wilson 1825 by Rick Wright, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/18897059101\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/6\/5475\/18897059101_021d6226fa_z.jpg\" alt=\"Thomas Henderson of Press, Wilson 1825\" width=\"432\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the great generosity of our friend Judy, we are the trustees of eight\u00a0volumes of <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.aba.org\/2013\/07\/fathers-and-sons-wilson-audubon.html\">Alexander Wilson<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gallica.bnf.fr\/Search?adva=1&amp;adv=1&amp;tri=&amp;t_relation=%22cb372754969%22&amp;lang=en\"><em>American Ornithology<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Wilson 1825 by Rick Wright, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rickwright\/18708056779\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/452\/18708056779_92c4b1a5fd_z.jpg\" alt=\"Wilson 1825\" width=\"443\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The first volume is dated 1808, but thanks to the <a href=\"http:\/\/sora.unm.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/journals\/auk\/v018n02\/p0216-p0218.pdf\">bibliographic scholarship of Walter Faxon<\/a>, we know that the this set in fact represents the &#8220;Ord reprint&#8221; 1824, plus the Supplement (Volume Nine) of 1825, which contains the first complete biography of the Father of American Ornithology.<\/p>\n<p>All of the volumes are adorned with the bookplate of one Thomas Henderson of <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=h2cLAAAAYAAJ&amp;pg=PA264&amp;lpg=PA264&amp;dq=%22thomas+henderson%22+press+castle&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=784rNzkaZb&amp;sig=u4QthdS3Oyqloc0BvQjiP2C9d30&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=hOuBVcNaiO6DBOGjgKgK&amp;ved=0CB4Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&amp;q=%22thomas%20henderson%22%20press%20castle&amp;f=false\">Press<\/a>\u00a0Castle. Thomas came from an Edinburgh banking family, and held the position of land <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=3zIxAQAAMAAJ&amp;pg=PA671&amp;lpg=PA671&amp;dq=%22thomas+henderson%22+press+castle&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=LZHYjt_H-c&amp;sig=iBcEfSAkSyIPU3li2Wb63hIWk9Q&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=hOuBVcNaiO6DBOGjgKgK&amp;ved=0CEkQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&amp;q=%22thomas%20henderson%22%20press%20castle&amp;f=false\">tax commissioner in the 1830s<\/a>;\u00a0he\u00a0seems to have devoted much of his attention to matters horticultural, and at one point supported a scheme for the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=jNIGAwAAQBAJ&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">speedy increase&#8221; of beekeeping<\/a> in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Henderson\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=3zIxAQAAMAAJ&amp;pg=PA671&amp;lpg=PA671&amp;dq=%22thomas+henderson%22+press+castle&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=LZHYjt_H-c&amp;sig=iBcEfSAkSyIPU3li2Wb63hIWk9Q&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=hOuBVcNaiO6DBOGjgKgK&amp;ved=0CEkQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&amp;q=%22thomas%20henderson%22%20press%20castle&amp;f=false\">married Elizabeth Mack<\/a> on September 14, 1830. (And was obviously very forgiving of her severely malformed arms and hands.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artprice.com\/artist\/41604\/john-watson-gordon\/lot\/vergangenheit\/5553014\/portrait-of-miss-elizabeth-mack-also-known-as-mrs-thomas-henderson-of-press-castle-edinburgh\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10075\" src=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Screenshot-2015-06-17-18.02.23.png\" alt=\"Screenshot 2015-06-17 18.02.23\" width=\"307\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Screenshot-2015-06-17-18.02.23.png 307w, http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Screenshot-2015-06-17-18.02.23-229x300.png 229w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Their son, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biographi.ca\/en\/bio\/henderson_alexander_1831_1913_14E.html\">Alexander Henderson<\/a> (1831-1913), emigrated to eastern Canada in 1855, where he became a professional\u00a0photographer.
