{"id":10018,"date":"2015-05-29T04:34:41","date_gmt":"2015-05-29T11:34:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/?p=10018"},"modified":"2015-05-26T20:04:47","modified_gmt":"2015-05-27T03:04:47","slug":"the-pygmy-of-fort-whipple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/2015\/05\/29\/the-pygmy-of-fort-whipple\/","title":{"rendered":"The Pygmy of Fort Whipple"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One hundred fifty years ago today, on May 29, 1865, Elliott <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/97523#page\/579\/mode\/1up\">Coues wrote to the editor of the\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/97523#page\/579\/mode\/1up\">Ibis<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>from his posting\u00a0at Fort Whipple, near Prescott, Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a delightful letter, humorous and good-natured, the source of the famous Couesian line about feeling &#8220;a sort of charitable pity for the rest of the poor world, who are not ornithologists, and have not the chance of pursuing the science in Arizona.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Coues reports on the habits of the avian inhabitants of northern Arizona&#8217;s pine forests, then tentatively reports an apparent novum,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>another new one among the host of [difficult] Empidonaces &#8230; already on record &#8230;. nothing like any northern one. It is considerably smaller than E. minimus &#8212; a veritable little pygmy, so that I thought it was a Regulus [kinglet] when I shot at it&#8230;. I have distinguished it in my notes and letters as E. pygmaeus.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This turns out to be the first record\u00a0of the buff-breasted flycatcher from Arizona, and the type description of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/107973#page\/365\/mode\/1up\">subspecies\u00a0<em>pygmaeus<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/page\/1861582#page\/71\/mode\/1up\">Coues later attempted to rename\u00a0<em>pallescens<\/em><\/a>).<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Coues was right, though, in wondering whether the bird might not have been described before: J.P. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/119418#page\/21\/mode\/1up\">Giraud had in fact named the bird in 1841<\/a>, describing it from a specimen said to be from Texas but <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=yvgeAQAAIAAJ&amp;pg=PA172&amp;lpg=PA172&amp;dq=giraud+sixteen+species+texas+birds&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=vIC07_Pb1W&amp;sig=-RWFulbOqu67_s30Qb_tmfmMUqk&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=zzFlVf2-LYmkoQTorYGgBQ&amp;ved=0CB8Q6AEwAQ#v=onepage&amp;q=giraud%20sixteen%20species%20texas%20birds&amp;f=false\">most likely from somewhere south of the United States<\/a>. Giraud called it the &#8220;buff breasted fly catcher,\u00a0<em>Muscicapa fulvifrons,&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>the names it still &#8212; mutating the mutanda &#8212; bears.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/item\/119418#page\/23\/mode\/1up\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10019\" src=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Screen-Shot-2015-05-26-at-7.53.04-PM-1024x532.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-05-26 at 7.53.04 PM\" width=\"600\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Screen-Shot-2015-05-26-at-7.53.04-PM-1024x532.png 1024w, http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Screen-Shot-2015-05-26-at-7.53.04-PM-300x156.png 300w, http:\/\/birdaz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Screen-Shot-2015-05-26-at-7.53.04-PM.png 1040w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The great historical curiosity attending this species is that it does not occur with any regularity in either of its type localities: there are hardly ten records of the bird <a href=\"http:\/\/www.texasbirdimages.com\/home\/region-4\/buff-breasted-flycatcher---region-4\">in Texas<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cals.arizona.edu\/research\/azfwru\/cjc\/research_Buff-breasted%20Flycatchers;%20distribution,%20population%20trends,%20and%20effects%20of%20fire.htm\">in Arizona<\/a> this sweetest-faced of the\u00a0<em>Empidonax\u00a0<\/em>no longer ranges north to anywhere near Prescott.<\/p>\n<p>Coues&#8217;s Fort Whipple pygmies were more special even than he suspected.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One hundred fifty years ago today, on May 29, 1865, Elliott Coues wrote to the editor of the\u00a0Ibis\u00a0from his posting\u00a0at Fort Whipple, near Prescott, Arizona.
