Storm Birds — MaybeBy
Yesterday noon, before the winds had really picked up and the heavy rain started, I thought I’d go check the ponds in the Newark parks to see what had blown in. Unfortunately, everything was shut down, presumably in anticipation of falling trees, so I had to cross the Passaic and check the sewage outfall in Kearny.
Ah, the romance and adventure of the birding life.
There were a few gulls on the wet parking lots, and a pair each of Mallards and American Black Ducks were out on the river, enjoying the combination of downstream flow, upstream tidal push, and winds. The only moderately surprising birds were five adult Laughing Gulls, neither terribly rare nor terribly late for the location, but maybe, just maybe, the vanguard of the seabirds this terrific storm is certain to push our way.
