Everybody’s Cold
ByEven me!

Most February mornings would find me opening the windows and pulling back the shades, but it’s been well below freezing now the past two mornings, and oatmeal and a fire are the best solution I can think of.
It’s been a lot harder on the desert birds, of course, with icicles on the water drip

and solid sugary disks in the hummingbird feeders.

My first order of business, after throwing on a coat and gloves, is to thaw the trochilids’ ambrosia, then to feed the waiting hordes of Gambel’s Quail and Mourning Doves.

I scatter the millet in full knowledge that I’m not really feeding those birds, though.

Ultimately all that seed really goes to support the neighborhood raptors, and this dramatic Cooper’s Hawk rushed in as soon as the doves did when she heard me open the garage door.

Wow–the fireplace looks cozy and I can’t believe how close to the house the Cooper’s came–I’m guessing it must be fairly desperate for food to be that bold!
