The Field Guide: A Panel at the Tucson Festival of Books

By Rick Wright

I hope you’ll all join Elizabeth Rosenthal, Jon Dunn, and me at this year’s Tucson Festival of Books for a panel discussion on the history, significance, and future of the field guide.

Liz is the author of an important biography of Roger Tory Peterson, Jon one of the best and best-known birders and authors on the North American scene.

Our discussion starts at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 13. And here’s a secret: Jon will be leading a free walk for Tucson Audubon that weekend, too, a great chance to sample the WINGS experience.

See you there!

Rick –

Jen Brumfield, Akron, Ohio here. Sincerely wish I could attend this event. Particularly since I have 5+ ideas for various field guides (gulls, waterfowl, shorebirds, (etc) of particular regions) that I’d like to be reviewed. Will the “results” of the discussion be presented online anywhere, in “scribe” form?

Wish I could be there. I’ll second Jen’s request for a transcript. Or better yet, audio recording.

Far too many regrets and far too few acceptances drifting in! I’ll talk to Jon and Liz and see what they think about somehow memorializing our conversation; meanwhile, I’m always more than happy to e-talk about such matters, so drop me a line if you want and I’ll try to get back to you quickly. I’m at birdaz@gmail.com.

Dear Jen, dear Grant,
You both out there? I’ve got Jon and Liz’s consent to somehow fix the results of our discussion. Let me ponder how to do it best,
