Sinaloa Wren Identification
For those lucky enough to be in Patagonia tomorrow, here are a few photos that might help to identify the Sinaloa Wren–if it reappears.
The Sinaloa Wren is on the right, with a Bewick’s and a Happy Wren to its left. Note the rather “cold” tone to the underparts and the clearly rusty tail of the Sinaloa. From above, the tail of Happy Wren barely contrasts with the rest of the upperparts:
while Sinaloa Wren’s tail is decidedly rufous:
Compared to the gray of Bewick’s (bottom) and the dull brown of Happy (center), the bright tone of Sinaloa Wren (top) can even recall the rich red of a Canyon Wren:
I’ve always found this tail contrast more useful than the color of the underparts, which I find hard to see in the tangles these Thryothorus love so much.
Good luck to all tomorrow!
