Mixed-up Tanagers?

By Rick Wright

One of the interesting sights yesterday in upper Madera Canyon was a brace of tanagers: one a male Hepatic, the other a female Western Tanager. They appeared to be firm traveling companions, making us wonder whether more was going on. Neither Pyle nor BNA adduces any cases of apparent hybridization between these two species; it will be interesting to see whether anything comes of this this summer!
