At Home with the Hummingbirds
A funny morning, spent pretending to do exactly those things I wanted to do. Alona, who runs the Tucson Hummingbird Project, and Tom, a well-known photographer and videographer, came over to interview me and to film some of the birds in our yard. My Western Screech-Owl played hide-and-seek the entire time of course, and it’s still warm enough that bird activity was at a minimum, but I pretended to watch feeders and take notes while Tom filmed, hoping that a hummingbird might actually come in.
No such luck, so we moved on to the interview portion of the morning; naturally, the instant I stood up next to the feeders, in came an Anna’s Hummingbird, followed by a Costa’s; they hummed and buzzed and hovered around until we moved out of the way so they could feed. I think Tom got some good footage, but all in all I would rather have been birding than be filmed pretending to be birding!
